As part of our Inquiry unit, Eat for Health the children participated in a healthy cooking session. Working in groups, the children chose a healthy recipe, prepared, cooked and tasted their dishes. The children learnt the importance of collaboration and negotiation. The children were engaged and thoroughly enjoyed the cooking session. The children will now reflect on this session and in their groups will present their findings of what worked well; what they could improve on; how well their team worked together and what they learnt about healthy eating. The video below was created using flipagram and is a representation of the special moments from our cooking session.
Healthy Cooking with 3/4
‘Eat for Health’ with Dietician Fiona Sammut
Further to our Inquiry topic, Eat for Health, we had the pleasure of a accredited practicing dietician Fiona Sammut present to our grade 3/4 students. Fiona covered a wide range of information including balancing the foods we eat; identifying sometimes food and healthy drinks; eating a variety of food; tasting with all your senses and thinking about how we eat. A copy of her powerpoint can be found below. Fiona finished her presentation with the children sampling some foods they may not have tried before, these included kiwi berry, lychee, paradise pears, pomegranate, and figs. The children were attentive and enjoyed the interactivity of the presentation. We thank Fiona for her time and effort.
‘Eat for Health’ with Nutritionist Sheree Cull
As part of our Inquiry unit ‘Eat for Health’ this term, we had an incursion where a nutritionist came to our school and presented to our grade 3/4 students. The nutritionist Sheree Cull is highly qualified with a Bachelor and a Master’s degree specialising in the field of nutrition. She works predominately in the education sector promoting the theory and practice of good nutrition. Sheree spoke to the children about the components of the human body; macro-nutrients (water, fats, carbohydrates and protein) and micro-nutrients (vitamins and minerals). Sheree also covered via an interactive activity with the children, the different food groups and what types of food make up each group. The children found Sheree’s presentation informative and engaging. We have invited Sheree back to help us with our practical session on food preparation and we look forward to seeing her again.
Welcome to 3/4 OT for 2015

This is our Literacy board. The work is from the set reading activities the children complete. Each term the children are allocated a set text which they read and use to complete their reading activities. The texts chosen this term is from the author Roald Dahl. Each group is based on reading ability and the appropriate text is allocated accordingly. Once the children finish reading the set texts they are allocated other texts either by the same author or based on their interest. Reading for pure enjoyment outside of these texts is highly encouraged and the children are given this opportunity to borrow of types of texts during their weekly Library sessions.
The reading activities so far for this term include the following:
- Write a summary of the story in no more than 100 words.
- Draw a picture of a new friend for a character in the book. Describe what qualities they would have?
- Compare 2 characters in the story. How are they similar? Different?
- List the characters from the story and draw a picture of them.
- Draw a picture of your favourite part of the book and write a sentence about what is happening. Say why you chose this bit.
- Draw a poster advertising the book. Make sure you write on the poster why people should read it.
- Make a list of 10 adjectives from your book. Remember adjectives are words that describe the noun. Find 5 words from your book you are unsure of and look up the meanings in the dictionary and write these in your reading book.
- Write a description of the main character: their looks, the way they dress, the way they talk and their personality.
The beginning of Lent. As a class we discussed the sacrifices Jesus made for us and how we could also make a sacrifice during Lent. The children thought about what they could sacrifice in the way of giving something up or by doing something extra in their lives. The children helped each other trace the outline of their foot and wrote their Lenten promises. The feet represent the journey that Jesus and we as Catholics travel during Lent. At the end of Lent we will reflect upon our Lenten promises and discuss if we were successful in keeping them and what difficulties we experienced and why.

Lakewood Park Camp
Camp Lakewood is located on a 100 hectare farming property overlooking Lake Victoria, part of Victoria’s famous Gippsland Lakes. It is situated 16 kilometres from Bairnsdale or about 3½ hours drive from Melbourne. Camp Lakewood is operated by our wonderful Physical and Health Education teacher, Kevin Cahill.
The camp was fantastic, with fun and engaging activities. The activities included a river cruise, koala spotting, canoeing, tubing, raft building, stand up paddle boarding, bike riding, camp fire building and cooking, night walks, archery and a ropes course. We even witnessed a dolphin swim by, which you can see its fin in one of the photos below and an echidna in the wild. The food was tasty and the rooms were comfortable and secure. We were very spoilt having the camp site to ourselves. Below are some snaps of our time at Camp Lakewood. The students have been busy writing their Recounts of their time on camp which will be posted shortly.

Hi Guys,
